Attack drones are shot down over the Red Sea by a US warship.

A US warship successfully intercepted and shot down “multiple one-way attack drones” launched from areas in Yemen controlled by the Houthi rebels. The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that the USS Thomas Hudner was on patrol in the Red Sea at the time of the incident. CENTCOM confirmed that the ship was not damaged and there were no injuries among the crew.

The incident reflects heightened tensions in the Red Sea region, which have escalated since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas conflict. The Houthi rebels, who are backed by Iran and have control over parts of Yemen, have claimed responsibility for launching ballistic missiles and drones toward Israel in recent days.

Further complicating the situation, the Houthis hijacked the Galaxy Leader cargo ship in the Red Sea on Sunday. The vessel had around 25 crew members onboard at the time of the seizure.

In response to the hijacking, the United States has demanded the immediate release of both the cargo ship and its crew. State Department spokesperson Matt Miller emphasized this demand in a statement on Monday, calling for the Houthis to release the seized vessel and its crew without delay.

These developments highlight the ongoing instability in the region and the challenges posed by the Houthi rebels in Yemen, particularly in the maritime domain.
