Brighton 1-1 Sheffield United: Blades come from behind to lift themselves off the bottom of the Premier League table, with 10-man hosts punished by Adam Webster’s own goal

Sheffield United moved off the foot of the Premier League table by coming from behind to claim a point at 10-man Brighton.

Simon Adringa’s incredible early strike gave the Seagulls the lead for much of the match, but they were forced to lament their inability to translate their superiority into more goals.

The game was decided by Brighton midfielder Mahmoud Dahoud’s needless red card in the 69th minute for a rough challenge that went all the way down Ben Osborn’s leg.

Five minutes later, Blades equalized as Brighton defender Adam Webster diverted Jayden Bogle’s cross into his own net.

Additionally, Bogle had a fantastic opportunity to give Paul Heckingbottom’s team back-to-back wins by missing the mark with only Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele to beat.

The Blades, still four points from safety, are up from eighth place after moving past Burnley and out of last place for the first time since their 8-0 thrashing at the hands of Newcastle on September 24. Roberto de Zerbi’s team is currently in eighth place.

Blades end away woe at wasteful Seagulls

Up to Dahoud’s departure, the Blades were staring at more unpleasant records, thoroughly second best and potentially facing a sixth straight away loss.

Heckingbottom’s team was greatly boosted by escaping the statistic that no top-tier team has survived after losing 10 of their first 12 games.

It’s true that the hosts gave them a helping hand—not just with the dismissal, but also with the number of opportunities Brighton missed before.

Their goal in the sixth minute was a gem, as Adringa, an Ivory Coast winger, danced in from the left to beat two defenders, quickly exchanged passes with Facundo Buonanotte on the edge of the box, and blasted past Wes Foderingham.

Instead of seizing the advantage, Brighton’s momentum slowed down after their initial success.

Ansu Fati missed a chance to increase the lead, having been set up by Adam Lallana, as his attempt was stopped by Foderingham, who also skillfully deflected a 25-yard half-volley from Billy Gilmour.

Both teams have been severely impacted by injuries, with each missing almost an entire starting lineup. Brighton’s victory in the Europa League against Ajax came with a high price, adding James Milner, Pervis Estupinan, Lewis Dunk, and Evan Ferguson to their already extensive list of injured players.

Nonetheless, Brighton managed to introduce Kaoru Mitoma and Joao Pedro in the second half, both of whom immediately challenged Foderingham.

The Blades, on the other hand, showed resilience, maintaining their undefeated record against Brighton in their last five Premier League encounters, and not having lost at Brighton’s ground since 1987.

Cameron Archer played a pivotal role in their comeback, pressuring Webster at the far post leading to the equalizer, and setting up Bogle with a backheel that nearly resulted in a goal.

Brighton has managed to score in 29 consecutive league games but has not kept a clean sheet in the last 16. Their winless streak in the league has now extended to six matches, marking their longest under De Zerbi.
