On December 3, 1975, Danielle Colby was born in Davenport, Iowa. In the “American Pickers” episodes “Mama Knows Best” (2012) and “Sgt. Picker’s Lonely Hearts Club” (2016), her mother Sue made an appearance. Jehovah’s Witness Danielle grew up in “a very loving but strict household.” She has two sisters: Ann, who is younger, and Tara, who is older. Ann has appeared in Burlesque Le’ Moustache with Danielle under the stage name Carbomb Betty.
Career
Danielle saw a burlesque show featuring comedian/actress Margaret Cho and a dancer known as Satan’s Angel when her family was residing in Chicago. After the family relocated to Iowa, Colby founded Burlesque Le’ Moustache, which made stops in Iowa and Illinois, drawing inspiration from the performance to pursue a career as a burlesque dancer. Later on, she inaugurated Chicago’s Bump ‘n’ Grind Academy, run by Dannie Diesel.
When Danielle’s long-time friend Mike Wolfe offered her to work at the Antique Archaeology office, she accepted and started starring on the new reality series “American Pickers” (2012). Regarding his choice to have Colby on the show, Wolfe stated, “I wanted our show to be viewed in a different way, so I wanted someone who did not look like they would work in any antique shop.” My intention was for people to view antiques as enjoyable, unique, dangerous, and fantastic. The show debuted as the highest-rated new non-fiction series of 2010 and has now aired over 300 episodes across 22 seasons as of this writing. “My work on ‘American Pickers’ reflects my real life passion for history,” Danielle said of the show. The tale is what makes it beautiful. Vintage items lack significance if they don’t have a backstory. We can learn where to focus our humanitarian efforts in the present and the future from our history. This is the kind of thinking that drives me to look for explanations and backstories that might uplift people’s spirits and, occasionally, enable us to sit in silent contemplation with the darker aspects of history. The darker aspect that we usually ignore or carefully tuck aside. My intention is to expose all sides of history, present them to you, the audience, and empower you to take an active role in preserving history for future generations.”
