The English Premier League has announced a significant penalty against Everton FC, imposing a 10-point deduction for violating the league’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSRs). This decision, announced on Friday, has dramatically impacted the club’s standing, dropping them to 19th in the league, level with Burnley at the bottom of the table.
Before this penalty, Everton had secured 14 points from the first 12 games of the season, positioning them at 14th place. The Premier League’s statement explained that while Everton acknowledged breaching the PSRs for the period ending in the 2021/22 season, the extent of the breach was contested. However, after a five-day hearing last month, an independent commission agreed with the Premier League’s calculation, finding that Everton’s losses of £124.5 million exceeded the permissible £105 million threshold under the PSRs.
As a result, the commission deemed a 10-point deduction to be an appropriate sanction, which took immediate effect.
Everton has expressed both shock and disappointment at this decision and announced plans to appeal immediately. The club’s statement argued that the penalty was disproportionate and unjust, maintaining transparency and integrity throughout the process. They contested the finding of not acting in utmost good faith, a point they claim was not alleged by the Premier League during the proceedings. Everton described the severity of the sanction as unfair and not reflective of the evidence presented.
The team’s next game is against Manchester United on November 26, following the men’s international break. Last season, Everton narrowly escaped relegation, finishing 17th, just two points clear of the relegation zone.
UK lawmaker Caroline Dinenage commented on the decision, expressing disappointment for Everton fans and those advocating for fairness and sustainability in English football. She also suggested the need for an independent regulator for football governance in England.
