More children killed in Gaza in one month than in any other conflict annually since 2019
As the main hospital in the region was reportedly under “bombardment,” Israeli tanks surrounded a hospital in Gaza, according to the hospital’s director, CNN. This increased concerns on Friday that Israeli military action was putting Gazan patients and medical personnel in further danger.
The director of the Al Nasr and Al Rantisi Pediatric hospitals in northern Gaza, Mustafa al-Kahlout, told CNN that his facilities were encircled and that they had requested Red Cross assistance with an evacuation. Al-Kahlout remarked, “We are completely surrounded, there are tanks outside the hospital, and we cannot leave.”
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Hamas have separately reported ground fighting near the Al Shati camp and the Sheikh Radwan area, which are adjacent to the hospital complex. Al-Kahlout remarked, “We don’t have electricity, oxygen for the patients, medicine, or water.” “We are unaware of our future.”
His request comes amid reports of attacks near a number of other northern Gazan institutions, including the main hospital in the enclave, al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City.
A spokesman for the World Health Organization (WHO) claimed on Friday that 20 facilities in the Gaza Strip were “out of action” and that al-Shifa was “coming under bombardment.”
In response to a question during a briefing on Friday on a possible Israeli airstrike on the al-Shifa hospital, WHO spokeswoman Margaret Harris stated, “We know they are being bombarded, but I don’t have the details on al-Shifa.”
Late on Friday, the Israeli military declared that the attack on the al-Shifa hospital was caused by an unintentional projectile fired from inside Gaza.
The IDF was notified earlier today that the Shifa Hospital in Gaza City had been damaged. The IDF carried out this strike, according to the Hamas-run media office in the Gaza Strip, which claimed this right away, according to a statement released by Lieutenant Colonel Richard Hecht, the IDF spokesperson, to CNN.
“A misfired projectile launched by terrorist organizations inside the Gaza Strip hit the Shifa Hospital,” the IDF declared after reviewing its operating systems.

The IDF was notified earlier today that the Shifa Hospital in Gaza City had been damaged. “A misfired projectile launched by terrorist organizations inside the Gaza Strip hit the Shifa Hospital,” the IDF declared after reviewing its operating systems.
Hecht continued by asserting that “IDF troops operating in the vicinity” were the target of the shot.
People with injuries may be seen in multiple social media videos that appeared to be from al-Shifa’s outpatient facility.
The films show injured patients laying on the ground of the outdoor clinic, but it’s unclear what hit the facility. According to witnesses in the films, there were strikes in the neighborhood. CNN was unable to confirm the strikes.
Al Awda Hospital in northern Gaza claimed on Facebook that ten of its staff members were hurt, infrastructure was damaged, and nine vehicles were involved as a result of Israeli forces “targeting (of) the vicinity of Al Awda Hospital… and the vicinity of the Indonesian Hospital.”
According to the hospital statement, these included “two ambulances that were completely damaged.”
Doctors Without Borders stated in a statement on Saturday that it was no longer in communication with its employees at Al-Shifa Hospital. The attacks against Al-Shifa Hospital have significantly increased in intensity over the past few hours. The humanitarian organization stated in a post on X, formerly Twitter, that hospital staff had reported a horrific scenario within.
The medical facility’s staff and patients, some of whom were in critical condition and unable to move or flee, were the subject of the group’s grave concerns.
“A patient need surgery at this time. In our department, there is a patient who is already asleep. We can’t leave these individuals inside while we evacuate. Surgeon Mohammed Obeid at the hospital was quoted by the group as saying, “As a doctor, I swear to help the people who need help.”
Meanwhile, the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) issued a warning in a statement early on Saturday local time that an impending shutdown at the Al-Quds Hospital in Gaza City could result in the deaths of patients, including infants.
As a result of the running out of gasoline and the lack of help, Al-Quds Hospital may close in the next three hours, according to the PRCS. “500 patients and injured people won’t get access to healthcare. There will be fatalities among the ICU staff and the infants kept in incubators.
In order to maintain the minimum level of services, the PRCS said on Wednesday that it was reducing the majority of its operations due to fuel shortages.
Human rights organizations claim that Israel has committed war crimes by its widespread shelling of residential neighborhoods, evacuation orders, and territorial siege.
Although the IDF has not responded to the instances, it has frequently urged civilians to relocate south of Wadi Gaza, a canal that splits the Strip in half, as it steps up its attack on Gaza City and the northern part of the region.
According to the IDF, Hamas is infiltrating civilian infrastructure and it will be attacked “wherever necessary.” The IDF claimed to have released overhead photos earlier this month that displayed missile launchers and a tunnel entrance close to two Gaza hospitals. Such assertions cannot be verified by CNN. The Palestinian Authority Ministry of Health, located in Ramallah, as well as the official media under Hamas control, have refuted allegations that hospitals are being exploited as attack targets.
Majority of Gaza hospitals have stopped functioning
Israel launched its insurgency within Gaza after the Hamas strikes on October 7. Although Israel had earlier claimed that 1,400 people had died in the attacks, officials announced on Friday that they now estimate the actual death toll to be closer to 1,200.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Lior Haiat acknowledged that foreign nationals and foreign workers are among the dead.
Because some of the remains have not yet been recognized, Haiat stressed that the current estimate of 1,200 is not a definitive figure.
Since then, the Israeli military has intensified its campaign in the northern part of Gaza, essentially dividing the region in half, with its most intense aerial bombardment and ground operations appearing to be focused there.
Based on information gathered from sources inside the Hamas-controlled zone, the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Ramallah reports that the offensive has killed over 11,000 Palestinians so far. The ministry claimed that over 27,000 additional people had been injured in Israeli strikes, which have resulted in at least 4,506 children and 3,027 women losing their lives. CNN is unable to independently confirm these figures.
However, the effect on medical services has sparked worries about the hopeless state of affairs for people who are still in northern Gaza. 18 of the 35 hospitals in Gaza have ceased operations, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Ramallah, which gets its data from the area under Hamas’s control. This information was released on Thursday.
Furthermore, according to the ministry, 71% of all primary-care facilities have closed as a result of damage or a fuel shortage. According to its statement, the hospitals that are still operating are increasingly closing and can only offer a restricted range of services.
The top UN human rights officer, Volker Türk, expressed skepticism on Friday regarding Israel’s unilateral creation of “safe zones” in Gaza, stating that no area in the region was secure for civilians.
