Taylor Swift has broken a Grammys record with her latest nomination for song of the year.
Swift’s song “Anti-Hero” has earned her seven nominations in the song of the year category, surpassing Sir Paul McCartney and Lionel Richie, both of whom have six nominations each. In addition to her song of the year nominations, Swift is also nominated in the album and record of the year categories, where she faces competition from artists like Olivia Rodrigo, Miley Cyrus, and SZA. Other nominees in the song of the year category include Lana Del Rey, Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish, Jon Batiste, and SZA. Swift’s album “Midnights” has earned her a nomination for album of the year, marking her sixth nomination in this category and tying her with Barbra Streisand for the most nominations for a female artist. If she wins, Swift will become the first artist to win album of the year four times.
Due to new regulations, it was more difficult for artists to make the Grammys shortlist this year.
The organizers have reduced the number of nominations from ten to eight in each category.
The Grammy Awards this year will be held in Los Angeles on February 4; the hosts have not yet been revealed.
On a (jelly) roll
British dance and electronic producer Fred Again has received a nomination for best new artist, alongside Gracie Abrams, Ice Spice, Jelly Roll, Coco Jones, Noah Kahan, Victoria Monet, and War and Treaty. While US rapper and singer Jelly Roll has been in the music scene since 2005, he gained significant recognition this year with his breakout single “Need A Favor.” If Jelly Roll wins the award, he will become the oldest person to be named best new artist, surpassing Sheryl Crow, who won the award at the age of 33.
The record of the year category includes nominees such as Cyrus, Rodrigo, Swift, SZA, Batiste, Boygenius, Eilish, and Monet. It’s important to note that song of the year and record of the year are distinct categories, with the former recognizing songwriters and composition achievements, while the latter focuses on the technical recording process, including production, engineering, and performance.
Many of the same artists are also nominated for album of the year, with Swift, SZA, Rodrigo, Batiste, Boygenius, Cyrus, Janelle Monae, and Lana Del Rey all receiving nods in this category.
SZA and supergroups
The nominations were revealed on Friday, and singer-songwriter SZA leads with a total of nine nominations. She received recognition in categories such as best progressive R&B album and best R&B performance. SZA’s collaboration with Phoebe Bridgers on “Ghost in the Machine” earned a nomination for best pop duo/group performance.
Phoebe Bridgers, part of the indie supergroup Boygenius, also received six nominations, including record of the year for “Not Strong Enough” and album of the year for “The Record.” Boygenius, consisting of Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus, and Bridgers, originally formed to release a self-titled EP in 2018 and returned with new music this year.
Victoria Monet has also garnered attention with nominations in multiple categories. In addition to best new artist and record of the year for “On My Mama,” she received nominations for best R&B album for “Jaguar II” and best R&B performance for “Hollywood.”
Jon Batiste, a surprise winner at last year’s Grammy Awards, is once again featured in the major categories. His album “World Music Radio” and the song “Worship” are both nominated for top prizes.
Pop power
Her first entry in a major category comes in Cyrus’s candidacy for Flowers in the song and record of the year categories, as well as her album of the year nomination for Endless Summer Vacation.
She had only ever been nominated once before, for Bangerz’s best pop album in 2015.
Despite never having received a Grammy, Lana Del Rey is recognized in five categories this year, including best alternative music performance and album.
Along with Eilish, Rodrigo has accomplished the remarkable feat of receiving nominations for her first two studio albums’ best album, song, and record.
This year, the 20-year-old former Disney star’s album Guts and single Vampire both charted well.
The song Eilish wrote for the Barbie movie, “What Was I Made For?” is nominated for both song and record of the year at the Grammy Awards this year. She has also been widely highlighted in the nominations.
Barbie’s music is well-represented in the nominees, having garnered 12 nods. The soundtrack of the movie includes Dua Lipa’s Dance the Night, which is a contender for song of the year.
I’m Just Ken by Ryan Gosling and Barbie World by Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice are competing for best song written for visual media.
Notable snubs
Country music sensation Morgan Wallen didn’t make it into any of the main categories and only managed one nomination for best country song.
His single “Last Night” became the first country song by a male solo artist to reach number one in 42 years, and it topped the US charts for 16 weeks.
Wallen, who faced backlash for using a racial slur in 2022, also had chart success earlier this year with his album One Thing At A Time.
Not only did Doja Cat not place in any of the major categories, but she was nominated for best melodic rap performance and best rap song lists for her song Attention.
Expected to be on the record of the year list, Paint the Town Red, which samples Dionne Warwick’s Walk On By, only made it to the best pop performance category.
At the 65th Grammy prizes, earlier this year, Beyoncé won four prizes, making her the most decorated artist in Grammy history with 32 wins overall.
