Guacamole is a delicious avocado-based dip that’s originally from Mexico. Here’s a basic recipe for guacamole:
Ingredients:
3 ripe avocados
1 lime (or lemon if preferred)
1 small red onion, finely chopped
1-2 cloves garlic, minced
1-2 Roma tomatoes, seeded and diced (optional)
1-2 jalapeño or serrano chilies, seeds removed and finely chopped (adjust to taste)
Salt to taste
Freshly ground black pepper to taste
A handful of fresh cilantro (coriander), finely chopped (optional)
Instructions:
Prep the Avocados: Slice the avocados in half and remove the pit. Using a spoon, scoop out the flesh and place it in a mixing bowl.
Mash: Use a fork or potato masher to mash the avocados. The consistency is up to you: some people prefer a chunkier guacamole while others like it smooth.
Add Lime (or Lemon): Squeeze the juice of the lime (or lemon) over the mashed avocados. This adds flavor and helps prevent the guacamole from browning too quickly.
Add Vegetables: Mix in the chopped onion, minced garlic, diced tomatoes, and chopped jalapeños or serranos.
Season: Add salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Mix well.
Garnish (optional): If you like cilantro, stir in the chopped leaves at this point.
Taste and Adjust: Give your guacamole a taste and adjust the seasonings if necessary.
Serve: Serve immediately, preferably with tortilla chips. If you have to store it for a while before serving, place a piece of plastic wrap directly on the surface of the guacamole (to reduce exposure to air) and refrigerate. This helps prevent it from browning. Another trick to prevent browning is to place an avocado pit in the middle of your guacamole when storing.
Enjoy your homemade guacamole!
Note: There are many variations of guacamole depending on regional preferences and personal tastes. Some people add ingredients like sour cream, cumin, or other herbs and spices. Experiment to find your favorite version!
