John Hines grew up in the south of Minneapolis in the United State of America with eight (8) siblings. He was born on November 8, 1953. After completing Roosevelt High School in 1971, he enrolled at Brown College right away, laying the groundwork for his future in broadcasting.
He went into broadcasting in 1972 at WAKC in Normal, Illinois. After 13 months he with WAKC, he went back to Minneapolis in 1973 to work at WWTC-AM. His broadcasting career starting going well when he joined KSTP-AM in 1975. Partnering with Charlie Bush on the “Hines and Bush” show, which achieved substantial popularity.
Hines became a television host with the show names “Twin Cities Today” in 1980. He was a host for two years and after that, He noticed his passion was not on TV which led him back to the radio.
In 1981, Hines made a comeback to radio when he joined WLOL-FM, greatly increasing the station’s ratings. He continued to dominate morning radio until WLOL was sold in 1990. He later switched to K102, where he reunited with Charlie Bush and helped the station achieve high ratings, particularly among the 25–54 age group. During his nearly 17-year employment at K102, the station won the Station of the Year award from the Country Music Association. He later moved to KTLK-FM in 2006 where he was hosting a morning talk show. John Hines also joined News Radio 830 WCCO in 2010, where he was also hosting an evening show before taking over the midday slot in 2011. He continued till 2018 that was when he retired.
In 2018, Hines retired from daily broadcasting after more than 40 years of service. For many devoted listeners who had been used to his recognizable voice and captivating style, his departure signaled the end of an era.
