Born on June 10, 1971, in Monroe, North Carolina, Joel Hailey, widely known as JoJo Hailey, is a prominent figure in the music industry. His parents, Cliff and Anita Hailey, were both gospel singers, which influenced his musical path. JoJo has an older brother, Cedric, famously known as “K-Ci” Hailey. The family’s musical talent extends further, with connections to R&B artists such as Fantasia Barrino, Dave Hollister, Calvin Richardson, and Stephanie Mills.
The Hailey family spent some time in Baltimore, Maryland, before settling back in Charlotte during Joel and Cedric’s teenage years.
In the 1980s, Joel, along with his brother and their father, were members of a gospel group named Little Cedric and the Hailey Singers. This group gained some recognition with albums like “I’m Alright Now” in 1983, “Jesus Saves” in 1984, and “God’s Blessing” in 1985. The album “Jesus Saves” notably climbed to the fourth position on the Billboard Gospel Albums chart, and “God’s Blessing” reached the 22nd spot.
Career
In 1989, Joel Hailey, alongside his brother and the DeGrate brothers, Donald and Dalvin, formed the R&B group Jodeci. Their debut album, “Forever My Lady” (1991), was a major hit, achieving 3× Platinum status. It secured the 18th spot on the Billboard 200 chart and topped the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Popular singles from the album, including the title track, “Stay,” and “Come and Talk to Me,” dominated the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, with “Come and Talk to Me” also achieving Gold certification.
Their follow-up album, “Diary of a Mad Band” (1993), earned 2× Platinum certification, reaching #3 on the Billboard 200 and maintaining the top position on the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The album featured the Gold-certified single “Cry for You.”
The group’s third album, “The Show, the After Party, the Hotel” (1995), continued their success, reaching #2 on the Billboard 200 and #1 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, along with achieving the fourth position on the UK Albums Chart. This album produced hits like “Freek’n You” and “Love U 4 Life,” which were top 10 hits on the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
After “The Show, the After Party, the Hotel,” Jodeci took a hiatus, eventually reuniting in 2014 and releasing “The Past, The Present, The Future” in 2015, which reached #23 on the Billboard 200 and #2 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
In addition to Jodeci, Joel and his brother formed the R&B duo K-Ci & JoJo in 1996. Their debut album, “Love Always” (1997), was a commercial success, achieving 3× Platinum status in the U.S. and charting highly in other countries. The single “All My Life” was particularly successful, topping charts in multiple countries.
