His parents, Cliff and Anita Hailey, were both gospel singers, which influenced his musical path. JoJo has an older brother, Cedric, famously known as “K-Ci” Hailey. The family’s musical talent extends further, with connections to R&B artists such as Fantasia Barrino, Dave Hollister, Calvin Richardson, and Stephanie Mills.
The Hailey family spent some time in Baltimore, Maryland, before settling back in Charlotte during Joel and Cedric’s teenage years.
In the 1980s, Joel, along with his brother and their father, were members of a gospel group named Little Cedric and the Hailey Singers. Popular singles from the album, including the title track, “Stay,” and “Come and Talk to Me,” dominated the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, with “Come and Talk to Me” also achieving Gold certification.
Their follow-up album, “Diary of a Mad Band” (1993), earned 2× Platinum certification, reaching #3 on the Billboard 200 and maintaining the top position on the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The album featured the Gold-certified single “Cry for You.”
The group’s third album, “The Show, the After Party, the Hotel” (1995), continued their success, reaching #2 on the Billboard 200 and #1 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, along with achieving the fourth position on the UK Albums Chart. This album produced hits like “Freek’n You” and “Love U 4 Life,” which were top 10 hits on the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
