More information regarding the untimely death of Maleesa Mooney is coming to light.
Officials have determined that the model, aged 31, who was found dead in her downtown Los Angeles apartment on Sept. 12, was subjected to “homicidal violence,” as confirmed by the L.A. County Department of Medical Examiner. The autopsy report, which was published by a local outlet, revealed that the victim, who was two months pregnant at the time, had been beaten and forcibly placed inside her refrigerator. Her wrists and ankles were bound together and tied behind her back using electronic cords and clothing items. Additionally, she was gagged with a piece of clothing in her mouth, and her body displayed visible injuries to her head, torso, and arms. The medical examiner stated that while the blunt force traumatic injuries alone might not have been life-threatening, the circumstances of her discovery strongly indicated her involvement in a violent physical altercation before her death.
While toxicology testing detected traces of cocaine and alcohol in Mooney’s system, the medical examiner’s report emphasized uncertainty about whether these substances played a role in her death, given the injuries observed on her body.
The report stated, “Based on the history, circumstances, and autopsy findings, as currently known, Ms. Mooney’s death was likely the result of, or at least related to, the action of another individual(s). Without findings to elucidate a clear mechanism of death, or knowledge of the sequence of events leading up to Ms. Mooney’s death, the cause of death is deemed homicidal violence. The manner of death is homicide.”
Mooney’s body was found in her apartment on September 12, six days after she was last seen alive on surveillance footage. The discovery was made during a police welfare check, which was requested by her mother, as mentioned in the report. Two days after the distressing find, Mooney’s sister, Jourdin Pauline, a Guyanese pop star, expressed her anguish about the violent incident.
Pauline shared on Instagram on September 14, “This is so sick I can’t believe my baby big sister is gone!!! The reason I’m me is because of you!!! My first best friend, the one who taught me everything I know!!”
“The people you touched and loved will continue on for you and preserve your name in the most lovely and affectionate way,” she continued. This was not at all what you deserved.”
Additionally, the singer shared a GoFundMe page praising Mooney as “an incredibly sweet and generous soul.”
“Even though she was taken in a vicious, senseless and heinous way we would like to remember Maleesa in all of the glorious ways God divinely made her to be,” the text said. “She brightened every room she entered and saw the good in everyone.” Maleesa had one of the most kind and sympathetic hearts you would ever meet, and she was just as intelligent as she was gorgeous.”
Nichole Coats, another model, was also found deceased in her downtown Los Angeles apartment two days before Mooney’s body was located, which raised concerns about a potential connection between the two cases. However, the police stated on September 20 that they had not found any evidence to suggest that the deaths of Ms. Coats and Ms. Mooney were related.
Coats’ cause of death was subsequently determined to be accidental. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner determined that the 32-year-old died from a combination of cocaine and ethanol (alcohol) toxicity.
