Spanish officials reported that more than 700 migrants were rescued from four different boats near the shores of Spain’s Canary Islands. One boat carried 247 people, another had 238, and the remaining two had 254 each. Tragically, two individuals were found dead on one of the boats, and two others died in a hospital. Additionally, 12 people are receiving medical treatment in hospitals. Spain’s Interior Ministry noted that from January 1 to October 31 of the current year, a total of 30,075 migrants arrived in the Canary Islands by sea, which is more than double the number who arrived during the same period in the previous year. The Canary Islands are located off the west coast of Morocco.
Canary Islands migrant arrivals are almost at an all-time high.
The Canary Islands are situated approximately 100 km (60 miles) off the western coast of Africa. Over the years, the archipelago has become a favored route for migrants seeking entry into Europe due to increased border controls in the Mediterranean.
Spain’s Interior Ministry reported on Thursday that the number of undocumented migrants who have arrived in the Canary Islands this year has risen by 111% compared to the previous year, reaching a total of 30,705. This figure is approaching the all-time high of 31,678 undocumented migrants recorded in 2006.
