He acted in films including In Dubious Battle (2016), The Last Kiss (2006), The Broken Hearts Club: A Romantic Comedy (2000), and The Ex (2006). He provided the voices for the Netflix series BoJack Horseman (2017, 2020), Chicken Little (2005), and Oz the Great and Powerful (2013).

Braff co-starred in Garden State, his directorial debut, which came out in 2004. He also composed the soundtrack album and wrote the screenplay. On a $2.5 million budget, he shot the movie in his native state of New Jersey. Zachary Israel Braff was raised in South Orange, New Jersey, and the nearby community of Maplewood. He was born there on April 6, 1975. His father, Harold Irwin “Hal” Braff (1934–2018), founded the state’s American Inns of Court (AIC), served as a lecturer, trial lawyer, and Rutgers Law School alumnus. He was also an elected trustee of the National Inns of Court Foundation. Anne Brodzinsky, whose real name was Anne Hutchinson Maynard, was a clinical psychologist. During Braff’s early years, his parents split and got married to other people.

Before Braff’s mother married his father, she converted from Protestantism to Judaism. Braff’s father was born into a Jewish family.According to Braff, he was raised in a “very strong conservative/orthodox [Jewish] upbringing.” Oheb Shalom Congregation was the venue for his bar mitzvah service.Despite identifying as Jewish, he stated in 2005 that he was “not a huge organized religion guy” and in 2013 that “the religion (Judaism) doesn’t necessarily work for me.” Author Joshua Braff is his older brother. Braff was a student at Stagedoor Manor, a “training center” for young performers in the performing arts, serving ages 10 to 18. Josh Charles, an actor, and Braff first became friends at Stagedoor. Braff joined the fraternity Phi Kappa Psi and studied film studies at Northwestern University’s School of Communication. He graduated in the class of 1997.

In 1989, Braff made his TV debut alongside Craig Ferguson and Gwyneth Paltrow in the CBS series High. The pilot for the television show never aired. In the 1990s Babysitters Club episode “Dawn Saves the Trees,” Braff made an appearance. In the 1993 film Manhattan Murder Mystery, he starred opposite Woody Allen. Braff appeared in a Macbeth production directed by George C. Wolfe at the Public Theater in New York City in 1998.In the 2001 season premiere of the medical comedy Scrubs, Braff played the role of John Dorian, better known by his initials “J.D.” It was Braff’s first noteworthy role in a television show. Braff’s contribution on the show earned him nominations for one Emmy and three Golden Globes. One of the Scrubs episodes that Braff directed was the 100th episode, “My Way Home.” In the ninth season of the show, Braff appeared in six episodes as a cast member and executive producer.
