Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon looks like the epic sci-fi fantasy franchise Netflix has been searching for.

The debut of the official trailer for Zack Snyder’s “Rebel Moon” movie has been revealed, showcasing its potential as the grandiose sci-fi series Netflix has been on the lookout for.

Snyder’s newest film, set to premiere on Netflix on December 22, was the highlight of the streaming service’s extensive Geeked Week 2023 event with a special online showcase on November 12. During this 30-minute digital event, Snyder unveiled the comprehensive teaser for the initial part of “Rebel Moon,” also known as “Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire.” From our perspective, this could be the high-budget, visually stunning, and dynamic multimedia saga that Netflix has been aspiring to acquire.

When the first teaser for “Rebel Moon” was released in August, which we noted as an unexpectedly intriguing Star Wars-esque venture from Snyder and Netflix, it was somewhat cryptic about its storyline. True to Snyder’s style, it featured visually stunning scenes, large-scale action sequences, and his trademark slow-motion cinematography. However, aside from a short plot summary that accompanied the teaser, the details of “Rebel Moon’s” narrative were not entirely clear to the audience.

The official trailer for “A Child of Fire” provides a clearer picture of what to expect from the first of two upcoming Netflix films co-written and directed by Snyder. The trailer introduces us to Kora (played by Sofia Boutella), a mysterious woman who becomes part of a farming community on a moon called Veldt. Their tranquility is shattered when the Motherworld’s oppressive forces, reminiscent of Star Wars’ Galactic Empire, arrive with hostile intentions.

Led by Regent Balisarius (Fra Fee) and the merciless Admiral Noble (Ed Skrein), these forces target Veldt for retaliation after its inhabitants inadvertently trade their harvest with the Bloodaxes, rebels pursued by the Motherworld. Determined to safeguard her newfound haven, Kora embarks on a quest across the galaxy to assemble a group of fighters, preparing to stand against the overwhelming might of the Motherworld’s army.

At first glance, “Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire” might look like the initial chapter of a two-part cinematic event premiering on Netflix. Yet, Zack Snyder envisions a much larger future for “Rebel Moon,” aiming to expand it into a diverse franchise on the leading streaming platform.

In an interview with Total Film, Snyder, known for his work in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), expressed his desire to create an expansive universe within “Rebel Moon,” including an animated series, a narrative podcast, an animated comic book, and even a video game. Thus, “A Child of Fire” marks the start of what could be a major new intellectual property for Netflix, contingent on the success of this first film.

Regardless of whether “Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire” achieves top rankings among Netflix movies or kickstarts its own series, there’s more to anticipate in Snyder’s universe. “Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver” is set for a Netflix release on April 19, 2024, followed by R-rated versions of both films slated to arrive on the service later the same year.
