As tensions between Iran and Israel continue to rise, the Ghanaian government has announced that its embassy in Tehran will close immediately.
Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, revealed the situation on social media on Monday, June 16, saying that the decision was made to protect Ghanaian lives.
“After an escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict, the Mahama administration has decided to immediately evacuate Ghanaians living in Iran in order to protect Ghanaian lives,” the minister said.
“Ghana’s embassy in Tehran has been closed immediately to ensure the safety of our embassy personnel.”
Mr. Ablakwa further revealed that Ghanaian diplomats, students, professionals, and other citizens now living in Iran will be among those evacuated through the country’s land borders.
He promised that every attempt is being taken to guarantee everyone who is impacted can travel safely.
He also said that the government is keeping a careful eye on Israel’s security situation and may give more directives when the time is right.
“In the meantime, we have directed that all Ghanaians in Israel keep in close contact with our consular department and that embassy operations in Tel Aviv be minimized,” he continued.
The government emphasized that every effort would be made to preserve Ghanaian lives and restated its desire for a diplomatic settlement to the issue.
